Description

Nestled below the summit of Sonoma Mountain at the headwaters of Sonoma Creek lies the Van der Kamp Vineyard. The elevation varies between 1200 and 1500ft with a north to northeast aspect. The climate is influenced by two fog banks, which as Martin Van der Kamp puts it ‰ÛÏdo battle‰Û. One moves in from the Petaluma Gap to the east and the other from the San Pablo Bay to the south. These two forces create a halo effect over the vineyard that allows sun to shine on the vineyard while the surrounding areas are shrouded in fog. The wines produced from the fruit of this vineyard possess a distinctive savory character and have a tannin structure indicative of their mountain heritage.

The 2012 Van der Kamp Vineyard Pinot Noir is a dark garnet color, with aromas of smoked meat, brambly ripe raspberry, ground sage and espresso notes leaping from the glass. Bright flavors of red fruits mingle with mushroom, cured meats, toasted oats, and dried herbs. The seamless acidity and concentration lead to a structured finish that is enjoyable now, but will be best with 2-5 years of cellar age.
