2016 Vin Gris of Pinot Noir Rosé Sonoma County

Vineyard Notes
The Spell Rosé is produced from the Saignée (French for “bleed”) of the Pinot Noir. The juice for this wine is removed (“bled”) from each lot of Pinot Noir as it is being destemmed into the fermenter.  It is transferred to a stainless steel tank which is maintained at 50 degrees F to promote a slow, cool fermentation that preserves the fantastic aromatics.   Once the primary fermentation has completed (2-4 weeks after the last lot of Pinot Noir is process) the wine is moved to a selection of neutral French oak and stainless steel barrels for another 6 weeks of aging before bottling in January.

Winemaker Notes
Slightly deeper in color than the 2015 vintage, the 2016 Spell Rosé maintains a rich salmon color.  Aromas of white strawberry, watermelon rind, peach pit and a smoky minerality fill the glass.  Refreshing flavors of fresh spring strawberries, honeydew melon and raspberries are bound by tangy acidity and a smooth, lingering finish.  Those of you who are familiar with previous vintages won’t be disappointed.  Serve chilled and drink now or over the next eight months.

  • The Corkscrewer Report, Johannes Marlena Score: 90

Baby pink in the glass, the color of this rosé may mislead you into thinking this is a lightweight. But no, this is a surprisingly hearty pink wine, with weight on the mid-palate and texture round and supple. Cute to look at, but no pushover. Solidly structured, with fresh acidity cleansing the palate, the attractive, young red fruit flavor of the wine is restrained, coquettishly quiet. With proceeding sips from the glass, the sharp, bright bouquet of young raspberry, pomegranate, peach and pink roses reminds you this baby knows how to have fun too.

  • International Wine Report Score: 89

This pale colored Rose wine opens with a bouquet of rose petals, red cherry, strawberry and hints of cantaloupe. There are ripe flavors of white peach, orange rind, red cherry and strawberry starburst candy. This shows wonderful structure and a delicate texture (Best 2017-2021) – April, 2017 (OB)
