Millennial Wine Drinkers Review Spell Estate

Greg and India of Millennial Drinkers tasted and reviewed the 2014 Spell wines and chatted with our winemaker, Andrew Berge, about the process.  Here’s what they had to say:

Spell Estate is a boutique winery located in Sonoma County and focuses on high quality, limited production Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. All the fruit used in their wines are from prestigious vineyards that all focus on sustainable farming practices in different microclimates across the Sonoma County. At the moment Spell Estate sources fruit from Alder Springs Vineyard, DeVoto Vineyard, Doña Margarita Vineyard, Dutton Sullivan Vineyard, Terra de Promissio Vineyard, Umino Vineyard and Weir Vineyard. All of these vineyards have been chosen due to exception relationships that have been developed with their growers.

Spell Estate’s winemaker is Andrew Berge who started out his wine industry career during his college career at University of California Davis where he graduated with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. After school, Andrew went to New Zealand for eight months where he worked at Rapara Vintners (Custom Crush facility) producing mostly white wines (7,000 tons of white wine and 700 tons of red wine) for estates like Matua Wines. In 2006, Andrew came back to the United States at Chasseur Wines where he worked under his mentor Bill Hunter. In 2012, Andrew began working as the winemaker at Spell Estate and then started up La Pitchoune Winery with the Nielsen family. His latest project started up in 2014 with Tiny House Vineyards.

At the moment Andrew is making the following bottlings at Spell Estate.
